The Newbie’s Guide to Massage

Are you brand-new to massage therapy? While massage therapy has been around a long time, there has to be a first time for everyone. If you’ve never experienced the benefits of a professional massage, we understand that you may be feeling a bit intimidated. Have no fear! We’re here today to talk you through everything you should expect at your very first massage.

First off, make sure that you are feeling well on the day of your appointment. If you have an illness with fever or rash, it’s a good idea to wait until you are feeling better. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your appointment so that you are not feeling rushed. One of the many benefits of massage is increased relaxation, but if you are super stressed it will take your body a bit longer to reach a relaxed state.

Before your massage, you will have the opportunity to discuss any health concerns with your massage therapist. This is also a good time to let your therapist know if there are any areas of the body you would like to have extra attention or no attention at all.

You will be given privacy to undress down to your comfort level (this is entirely up to you) and lie on the table under a cover. Your therapist will take care to keep you covered other than the part of the body that is being worked on. Be sure to let your therapist know if you are feeling hot, cold, or otherwise uncomfortable at any time throughout the massage. Your therapist is there for you and your comfort!

In order to get the most out of your massage, try to relax and allow all your stress to melt away. Remember to breathe deeply and avoid tightening your muscles. There may be sensitive areas that your therapist discovers during your treatment. If something hurts, be sure to let your therapist know right away so they can address it properly.

After your massage, you will be allowed to take your time getting up and getting dressed in private. You will also be offered water, and we recommend that you take this as it will help your body to flush any toxins or waste that may have been released during your treatment. Try to avoid rushing back to work or responsibilities if you can, as this will allow the relaxation you experienced to continue.

Remember that the benefits of massage tend to be cumulative, so the more often you come in for treatment the better you will feel!
